One of the enjoyable things about cabinet making is hearing what ideas you have.
As a furniture/cabinet maker, it’s our job to take that vision and make it work both from the visual design and the mechanical components.

WDM…
The full name of my shop is:
“Wood Designs by Michael - Furniture & Cabinets” . . . or . . .
WDM Furniture & Cabinets
Appreciating all that my uncle taught me and the memories of being alongside him is the reason I chose the name to include his initials:
Willam David Mentch
My uncle, my teacher.
About…
My name is Michael Ruiz, born and raised in Santa Rosa, California.
I’ve been learning and building furniture and cabinets for over 20 years.
I gained most (if not all) of my experience from my uncle, Bill Mentch.
I have wonderful memories of when he picked me up from school & my helping him set up his new business.
That’s when I realized what I wanted to do - design and build furniture.
Experience…
I started learning from my uncle in my junior and senior years of high school from 1998-1999 when he sponsored me for work experience.
That was when I knew what I wanted to do after graduating.
Being one on one with my uncle before I graduated, and helping him set up his shop, makes me remember his commitment to making his shop grow.
Years following, I went in another direction out of necessity which allowed me to take up another trade, automotive painting.
Throughout the next 20+ years following graduation, I continued growing in my knowledge of the cabinetry business.
Whenever I could, I helped at Bill’s shop. This would include going to job sites learning to measure, driving his delivery truck, building & installing cabinets.
Putting My Skills to Work…
While having a different form of employment, I wanted to put my woodworking skills to the test - our family home.
Bill always allowed me to work in his shop for projects around our home and at the same time helping him with his jobs.
I considered that a fair trade!
Now came the ultimate test of the skills I learned - designing and building an entire kitchen for my family home, much of which are in the 1st photos in the gallery. Before I was done, each room included new cabinets/closets.
However, we were only able to enjoy our new remodeled home cabinets for a few years as we lost our home in the destruction of the 2017 fires.
We decided to rebuild. I went to work on designing cabinets throughout the new home to fit our family needs.
While my uncles were able to take care of some of the larger cabinets, Bill allowed me to use his shop to build the rest of the cabinets we now have, which are in the gallery as well.
